Why a canopy

Secure storage for the back of your ute

A canopy turns the open tub or tray into lockable, covered space. Tools, camping gear, a fridge and luggage stay dry and out of sight, and you can reach them from the rear and, on many canopies, from the sides.

Canopies suit work and touring. A tradie wants tools secured and easy to reach, and a tourer wants a fridge, drawers and 12V power in a tidy layout. The right canopy depends on your ute, your tub or tray and the way you use it.

We are an authorised ARB dealer in Warwick, so we can talk you through the range and help you match it to your vehicle. See our builds for vehicles we have worked on, or read on to compare the options.

Choosing a canopy

What to think about before you choose

There is no single right canopy. These are the questions we work through with you.

Planning checklist for a ute canopy
ConsiderWhy it matters
Your uteMake, model, year and cab type (single, extra or dual) decide which canopies suit it.
Tub or traySome canopies fit a standard tub and others are made for an alloy tray. Tell us which you have, or are planning.
Canopy or lidA canopy gives standing storage space. A lid keeps the profile low. Pick on how much space and height you need.
WindowsLift-up windows open wide and sliding windows keep things tidy. Think about how you reach your gear.
LockingARB lists central locking options on some canopies. Decide whether you want keyless entry tied to the vehicle.
Roof rackIf you want a rack on top, choose a canopy with mounts or a rack made for it, and plan the load.
Inside the canopyFridge, drawers, a pantry and 12V power all need planning together so the layout works.
WeightThe canopy and everything in it count toward your ute's payload and GVM. Check your limits.

Gear within reach

The point of a canopy is easy access to what you carry. A rear door that lifts out of the way, side windows that open and a layout that suits your gear all help you get at it quickly.

Tell us what you carry and how often you get at it, and we will help you match that to a canopy and a layout, then confirm what suits your ute.

Tray and canopy

Built your way

ARB describes the MITS Alloy range as a modular system, with the canopy, tray and fit-out packages chosen to suit how you use the vehicle. That includes internal fridge and drawer layouts, 12V power packages and rear wall packages with a spare wheel carrier.

It is a bigger decision than a bolt-on canopy, so plan the whole set-up together. Plan your build with us, or see what we do.

Fitment and weight

Get the fit and the weight right

General guidance, not engineering advice. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and your vehicle handbook.

  1. Match the canopy

Share your make, model, year, cab type and tub or tray. We check the canopy and options against your ute before you commit.

  2. Plan the inside

Decide what lives in the canopy, such as a fridge, drawers or 12V power, so the layout and the wiring suit each other.

  3. Check the weight

The canopy and its contents count toward your payload and GVM. Check your limits, and keep heavy items low and forward.

FAQs

Ute canopy questions, answered

Straight answers on choosing, fitting and loading a canopy. This is general information, not engineering advice.

The basics

What is a ute canopy?

A canopy is a hard shell that fits over the tray or tub of a ute. It gives you lockable, covered storage for tools, camping gear and luggage, and keeps it out of the weather and out of sight. Some canopies are made for a standard ute tub and others for an alloy tray.

What is the difference between a canopy and a lid?

A canopy rises above the tub and gives you standing storage space. A lid, such as the ARB HardLid, sits low over the tub for a flat, lockable cover. A lid suits you if you want security without the extra height, and a canopy suits you if you want more usable space.

Do canopies suit dual-cab utes?

Yes, canopies are made for dual-cab utes as well as single and extra cabs. As an example, ARB lists MITS Alloy canopies in dual cab sizes from 1000mm to 1700mm. Which canopy suits your ute depends on the make, model, year and your tub or tray, so tell us what you drive.

What is the difference between ARB canopies and MITS Alloy?

ARB lists the Ascent, Classic Plus and Classic canopies for standard utes, and MITS Alloy as an alloy tray and canopy system with a modular fit-out. We can talk you through which direction suits how you use your ute.

Choosing and fitting

Will a canopy fit my ute?

Fitment depends on the vehicle, the cab type and whether you have a tub or a tray. We confirm the canopy against your ute before you commit. Send us your vehicle details and we will check it for you.

Can I fit a canopy myself?

Some people do, but a canopy needs to be positioned, sealed and secured correctly, and the central locking options need wiring. If you want it fitted properly, talk to us about fitment and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Can I add a roof rack to a canopy?

Often, with the right mounts. ARB lists roof rack mounts and rack frame sets for its canopies, and MITS Alloy roof racks for MITS Alloy canopies. Which one suits depends on your canopy and rack, so check with us before you buy.

What can I put inside a canopy?

Anything from a simple tool box to a full fit-out. ARB lists MITS Alloy internal packages with fridge positions, drawers, drop slides and pantries, plus 12V electrical packages with REDARC. We can plan the layout with you around what you carry.

Should I choose lift-up or sliding windows?

It comes down to how you reach your gear. Lift-up windows open wide and sit on gas struts, and sliding windows keep the side profile tidy. ARB lists both on the Classic canopy, so tell us how you use the canopy and we will suggest an option.

Weight and safety

How much weight can I put in a canopy?

Your ute has a payload and a GVM limit set by the manufacturer, and the canopy and everything in it count toward them. Check your vehicle handbook and any compliance information before you load up. This is general information, not engineering advice.

Will a canopy change how my ute drives?

It can. The extra weight and height change handling, wind noise and fuel use a little, and you need to allow for the extra height at low clearances. Keep heavy items low and forward and tie everything down.

Is my gear safe inside a canopy?

A canopy gives you lockable storage and keeps gear out of sight, which helps. ARB lists central locking options on the Ascent and Classic Plus. No lock is a guarantee, so avoid leaving valuables in the vehicle.
